Widespread Panic Welcomes Carrot Top In Las Vegas

159

Widespread Panic hit the midway point of their three-night stand at the Park Theater at Monte Carlo Resort and Casino on Saturday. The Southern jam act delivered bust out covers of “Cream Puff War” and “Fairies Wear Boots” on an evening that also them welcome longtime friend Carrot Top to help close out their second set.

John Bell & Co. got their second night in Sin City going with the party classic “Tall Boy.” Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul” and the old-school “Walkin’ (For Your Love)” followed. Later in the frame, the jam titans would pair Earth to America track “Good People” with Robert Johnson’s “Me And The Devil Blues.” The highlight of the set came next, as Panic served up a version of old-school favorite “Holden Oversoul” that saw them drop in their take on the Grateful Dead’s “Cream Puff War” in its midst. The cover from the Dead’s psychedelic era was dusted off the tune for the first time since May 7, 2016 – a span of 106 shows. According to PanicStream, it was also just the fourth time the band had ever split up the Space Wrangler cut with all of them featuring “Cream Puff War.”

“Postcard” was tapped to open up the second stanza as the band hit the official midway point of the run. After a take on “Little Kin,” keyboardist JoJo Hermann stepped up to sing lead on “Big Wooly Mammoth” which segued into the Bombs & Butterflies selection “You Got Yours.” The six-piece then dug in with another seamless pairing this time delivering “Second Skin” > “Pilgrims.” After serving up “All Time Low,” “Bear’s Gone Fishin’” would kick up a jam-filled run that would take them through the rest of the set. The ‘Til the Medicine Takes cut worked its way into Funkadelic’s “Maggot Brain.” Carrot Top would emerge next. The prop-comedian and Las Vegas resident, whose friendship with the band dates back to the mid-1990s, added percussion on the frame-closing “Chilly Water.” The sextet offered up a two-song encore with “Visiting Day” coming ahead of Black Sabbath’s “Fairies Wear Boots,” which had been sitting on the shelf since October 2016.
