Black Sabbath Fan Designs “Metal Bench” In Attempt To Reunite Original Band

The four original members of pioneering heavy metal band Black Sabbath may be immortalized in the form of communal infrastructure in their hometown of Birmingham, England in the not so distant future. The famous rock band may have closed the book on their careers as touring musicians in recent years, but their legacy lives on through their music and their fans who have supported them since the 1960s. One of those fans is an architect from Dubai named Mohammed Osama, who has been working to develop a “metal bench” themed around the original lineup as a tribute to the band alongside the city’s Broad Street.

According to local news outlet Birmingham Mail, Osama is hoping to lay his bench design on the city’s bridge overlooking the New Main Line Canal, where Birmingham’s own mini Walk-Of-Fame currently sits. The bench would feature the faces and first names of all four original members—Geezer Butler, Tony Iommi, Bill Ward and Ozzy Osbourne—in addition to the phrase, “Made in Birmingham 1968.” Four separate stars laid out in the shape of a cross featuring their full names would also be placed within the sidewalk pavement in front of the bench, which would sit right in the middle of the officially named, “Black Sabbath Bridge On Broad Street,” if Osama’s proposal is approved by the Birmingham city council.

The band’s guitarist Toni Iommi even shared an aerial image of the proposed area where the bridge currently sits to his Twitter account earlier this week, as seen below. According to the report, one of the main reasons for Osama’s proposal is simply the excuse just to get all four members in one place again for fans to say thank you, even if there’s no music being played.

“No gigs or anything,” Osama requested to go with his hopeful proposal. “Just the four them being celebrated together at their home town would be the best ending and closure I could possibly think of.” He continued his optimism in adding, “The Bull statue at the Bullring is one of the most photographed sculptures in England … We hope this new bench would rival that.”

There most likely wouldn’t be a performance even if the bridge did get approved, as that part of the Sabbath story came to an end following the final show of their farewell tour at Birmingham’s Genting Arena back in February 2017.
