Ryan Adams celebrates his 44th birthday today. The prolific singer-songwriter born on this date in Jacksonville, North Carolina scaled back his activities in 2018, but still managed to hold a memorable show at Red Rocks and lead the Exile On Bourbon Street all-star tribute to The Rolling Stones in New Orleans.
This year has seen Adams make just a handful of live performances, which he addressed at Red Rocks by revealing the tragic death of his brother Chris last year affected his ability to play live. In a since-deleted Instagram post, Adams earlier this year put out a call to his former backing band mates The Cardinals to join him in the studio to record songs in memory his late sibling.
Among those who Adams’ mentioned in the post was current Chris Robinson Brotherhood/Circles Around The Sun/The Skiffle Players guitarist Neal Casal. In celebration of Adams’ birthday today, below is a collection of videos featuring him and Casal performing an acoustic set together for the Irish television program Other Voices. Recorded on June 6, 2007 at St. James Church in Dingle, County Kerry the videos below capture Ryan and Neal performing “When the Stars Go Blue” and “Wild Flowers” off Gold and the Easy Tiger track “Two” as well as the Cold Roses favorite “Let It Ride.”
There’s also some of Adams’ signature silly banter (about Cher). Watch the session here:
