The second of three “This Date In Grateful Dead History” shows at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California featuring Grateful Dead bassist Phil Lesh and his latest Phil Lesh & Friends lineup took place on Friday night. Phil Lesh & Friends recreated a setlist the Grateful Dead used 40 years to the day prior at the Uptown Theater in Chicago on November 16, 1978.
Phil’s band for the run features guitarists Anders Osborne and Stu Allen, keyboardist Steve Molitz and drummer Nathan Graham. Last night he added vocalist Elliott Peck to the mix. Anders and Stu did the bulk of the lead singing over the course of the evening. Osborne started the night off by leading “New Minglewood Blues” before Allen sang “Dire Wolf.” The band then powered through a “Me & My Uncle” > “Big River” segment. Peck shined on a number of songs in the first set including “They Love Each Other,” “Brown Eyed Women” and “Dancing In The Street.”
Friday’s second set started with the familiar pairing of “Scarlet Begonias” > “Fire On The Mountain.” Stu handled lead vocals on the former with Anders up front for the latter. The frame continued on with “Samson & Delilah” and “He’s Gone” before the whole band got in on “Drums” by either hitting Graham’s kit or playing percussive instruments. A quick trip to “Space” was followed by the tender “Black Peter” and romp through “Truckin’.” Phil Lesh & Friends said farewell with a “U.S. Blues” encore.
