I’m sure in all the years that Anders Osborne has been coming up to play New York City, certainly too many shows to count, he’s played a gig or two in the middle of the week, a random Monday thing or Wednesday event over the course of his career. But, really, as anyone who saw him during his most recent trip to Brooklyn can attest to, Anders was made to play on the weekend, Friday and Saturday nights where the music is just one part of the larger equation of good times, good friends and partying. Friday night at Brooklyn Bowl was certainly a festive place, the typical pop-up Tulane reunions and five-months-til-Jazzfest krewe gatherings mixed with the rest of Osborne’s area fanbase, not to mention random groups of bowlers who had no clue what kind of show they had walked into. No matter where they came from or who they were there to hang out with, everyone in the room was there for the same reason: to have some fun… or maybe more accurately said: to laissez les bons temps rouler! And on that count, to the surprise of no one, Anders Osborne and his band delivered and then some.

Anders opened the show in vicious, angry fashion, with “Five Bullets” off his 2013 Peace release. Singing “boom boom boom, that American sound…” Osborne was knee-deep in distorted guitar from the start. The guitarist had large silver rings on his fingers and they created a visual blur to go with the sound of his guitar as they moved over the strings at, almost literally, breakneck speed. The setlist pulled from his entire career, punctuated by the crowd-loving staples of his concerts, showing off his breadth, skill and soul, from the slow down smoulder of “I’ve Got a Woman” to the freewheeling NOLA-flavored storytelling of “Back on Dumaine,” both off his 2007 album Coming Down.

Watching Anders play and sing is always a soul-cleansing experience, a perfect Friday night activity to transition to the weekend. Still, the question I kept asking was: who are these guys he’s playing with? Ron Johnson on bass is someone who’s been around and a perfect fit to back Osborne’s ranging guitar work, but David Torkanowsky on organ and keys and Chad Cromwell were revelations of the rock-jam.

Torkanowsky took several organ solos deep and provided plenty of zing when Osborne was unleashed. The jams featured a mix of flavors, occasional hints of a distorted Crazy Horse and then smooth melodic spirals that he seemed to pick up from his gigging with Phil Lesh. The highlight of the set had to be “Burning On The Inside” which, as it so happened, got things burning on the outside and pretty much every corner of the room. The bluesy tune found its footing and then exploded into a spaced-out full-band jam, quantity meeting quality, new friends and old friends dancing side by side, Anders Osborne owning yet another weekend in New York City.
