On Friday night, Dave Matthews Band took the stage at New York City’s Madison Square Garden to close out their two-night stay at the famed Manhattan arena. Dave Matthews and company gave attendees a 20-song performance that included an Aerosmith cover and a surprise appearance from Eric Krasno the night prior, so fans were more than ready to see and hear what the Virginia-native jam band had in store for night two.

The band started out with a mix of older tunes, opening the show with “One Sweet World”, “Granny”, and “Everyday” before going into some of their bigger hits including the always smooth and groovy “Crush”. The first real surprise of the night, however, came when renowned jazz trumpet player Jon Faddis came out to join the band for their performance of “Warehouse” and stuck around for a cover of Peter Gabriel‘s “Sledgehammer” about halfway into the show. After playing on with “Digging a Ditch” and “Don’t Drink the Water”, the band welcomed out another special guest in jazz guitarist Mark Whitfield, who sat in with DMB to help perform “Captain” from the group’s 2002 Busted Stuff LP.

One of the big guest surprises of the night came when jam band veteran Warren Haynes came out from backstage to join the band in on a pair of songs including a lengthy, 16-minute cover of Neil Young‘s “Cortez the Killer” and a slightly shorter rendition of DMB’s own “Tripping Billies”. Both performances featured some wonderful guitar playing from Haynes, which shouldn’t come as a surprise as the two guitarists have been known to jam on stage together every now and then. You can watch fan-shot footage of both “Cortez The Killer” and “Tripping Billies” with Warren Haynes below:

The show would continue with DMB welcoming Faddis back to the stage along with Trey Anastasio Band saxophonist James Casey and sax player Ron Blake to close the set out with “She”, and “Jimi Thing”, the latter of which containted a jam on Prince‘s “Sexy M.F.” Finally, the band returned to the stage for a two-song encore of “So Right” and “Grey Street”.

Dave Matthews Band will continue their 2018 fall tour with the next scheduled show in Uncasville, Connecticut on Sunday night. They’ll continue their ongoing concert campaign well into the new year with an extensive European tour scheduled to begin in in Munich, Germany on March 6th.
