The Dream Syndicate’s Steve Wynn was among the guests last night at the finale of this year’s annual 8 Nights Of Hanukkah With Yo La Tengo run at The Bowery Ballroom in New York City. Also joining the band were opening act Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet, fiddler Peter Stampfel and Ira Kaplan’s mother Marilyn Kaplan.
Yo La Tengo opened Sunday’s show with Dream Syndicate’s “Tell Me When It’s Over.” After “For You Too,” Shadowy Men On A Shadowy Planet came back to augment “The Evil That Men Do – Craig’s Version,” The Modern Lovers’ “She Cracked” and Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me.” Following “Pablo And Andrea,” Stampfel emerged for Michael Hurley’s “Polynesia #1,” followed by “Lewis” and “Is That Enough,” The Left Banke’s “Walk Away Renee” and The Fugs’ “New Amphetamine Shriek” featuring Jeffrey Lewis on additional vocals. YLT closed out the main set with “Autumn Sweater,” “Tom Courtenay,” “Blue Line Swinger” and Big Star’s “Take Care.”
The encore began with Wynn on guitar and vocals for Dream Syndicate’s “That’s What You Always Say” and “Glide.” Dallas Good of SMOSP then came out to play organ on Bob Dylan’s “Apple Sucking Tree.” Wynn’s time on stage came to an end with a rendition of Dream Syndicate’s “The Day Of Wine & Roses.” Stampfel was brought back along for “Griselda” with Marilyn Kaplan on vocals. Ira’s mom also sang the show and Hanukkah Run closing “My Little Corner of the World.” View audience-shot video from Sunday’s finale captured by Richard Wolf below:
