Fans of the rock band Queens of the Stone Age are typically used to hearing frontman Josh Homme belt out some pretty heavy music. But everyone—especially the sometimes overly-aggressive Homme—can stand to loosen up embrace their inner Santa Claus this holiday season. So it’s a nice surprise to hear that Homme will be releasing his first ever holiday singles this Friday with recorded covers of “Silent Night” and a spoken word version of “Twas the Night Before Christmas”. The two new recordings will also be made available as a 7-inch vinyl just in time for Christmas.
The physical version of the double-sided single is scheduled to arrive on Friday, December 14th, while digital versions of the recordings are set for release this coming Friday, December 7th. Homme’s updated version of “Silent Night” was recorded as a duet alongside Australian-based blues artist C.W. Stoneking. The two were able to set aside time to work out a new version of the classic holiday ballad while Queens of the Stone Age were down in Australia during their 2017 world tour in promotion of the band’s latest studio album, Villains.
On a more family-friendly note, Homme’s reading of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” includes vocal contributions from his wife, Brody Dalle, and their three children. Dalle had previously appeared on the band’s 2013 studio album, …Like Clockwork.
As of Tuesday afternoon, the pre-order copies for the limited edition 7-inch are already sold out, so fans had better hope for a Christmas miracle that Josh Homme announces more copies for stocking stuffers.
Sales and streaming proceeds for the two songs will go to benefit Homme’s own Sweet Stuff Foundation, a non-profit which provides assistance to career musicians, recording engineers, and their families struggling with illness and disability. Proceeds will also go to benefit Support Act, another non-profit based in Australia that works towards the same philanthropic initiatives.
