On Saturday night, Jason Mamoa joined the cast of Saturday Night Live as this week’s guest host. The hosting gig came as Momoa continues to promote his new Aquaman film, set to be released in North America on December 21st. Midway through Mamoa’s opening segment, SNL cast members Leslie JonesChris Redd, and Kenan Thompson—dressed in their finest George Clinton-style attire—crashed the stage to proposition Aquaman himself about a new theme song for the character.

“We got a request, we got a request,” Jones began. An amused Momoa responded, “You guys looks crazy! Is this for a sketch?”

“I’ll get to that,” Jones brushed him off. “Let me ask you something. Does Aquaman have a theme song? … ‘Cus we had an idea. You ever hear of ‘Aqua Boogie’ by “Parliament-Funkadelic? … You know, like George Clinton? P-Funk?” Momoa responded, “Not really…”

Thompson continued, “You know, ‘Aqua Boogie’. From the 1978 album, Motor Booty Affair?” Momoa responded that he’d never heard of it. In high-pitched chorus, Redd, Thompson, and Jones showed their surprise: “Whaaaaat?!” Leslie went on, “It is perfect for Aquaman. Check this out!” before the leading the trio in a few funky bars of the Parliament cut. (“Aqua boogie baby, never learned to swim; Underwater boogie baby, can’t catch the rhythm of the stroke.”)

But after a few bars of the song, Mamoa stopped them. “Hold on, hold on,” he inquired, “I mean, it’s a cool song, did you just say ‘never learned how to swim?’” Kenan replied matter-of-factly, “Yea, that’s how the song goes, you can check the lyrics if you need to.”

“So it’s a song about somebody who can’t swim?” Momoa clarified. “Well… I’m Aquaman, and his whole thing is he can kinda swim really well.” After taking a pronounced moment to register the contradiction, Jones replied, “Yea, but this is about a feelin’, man. You gotta give it a try, you know what I mean? Just read what’s on the cue card.”

Obliging the request, Momoa put on some Funkadelic-type shades of his own and proceeded to boogie down to the George Clinton classic. Watch the full clip below:

Of note, this SNL sketch was not the only time George Clinton’s music and aesthetic was referenced on late-night TV this past weekend. On Friday, Ice Cube teamed with The Roots for a performance of his new track, “That New Funkadelic“, on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
