Today is a big day for the record industry. First, CBS This Morning officially announced the nominees for the “big four” categories at the upcoming 61st Annual Grammy Awards in February: Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. Later, the full list of nominees was announced. The Grammy’s take place on February 10th, 2019 at Los Angeles’ Staples Center.
In the record category, Brandi Carlile’s “The Joke” will go up against Cardi B’s “I Like It”, Childish Gamino’s “This Is America”, Drake’s “God’s Plan”, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow”, Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All The Stars”, and Post Malone’s “Rockstar”.
The album category features a similar list of nominees, with Cardi B’s Invasion Of Privacy, H.E.R.’s self-titled album, Brandi Carlile’s By The Way, I Forgive You, Drake’s Scorpion, Post Malone’s Beerbongs & Bentleys, and Janelle Monáe’s Dirty Computer.
Nominees for the Song of the Year category, which honors the songwriters, include Kendrick Lamar and SZA’s “All The Stars”, Drake’s “God’s Plan”, Shawn Mendes’ “In My Blood”, Brandi Carlile’s “The Joke”, Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow”, and Childish Gambino’s “This Is America”.
Rounding out the “big four”, the Best New Artist nominees include Chloe X Halle, Luke Combs, Greta Van Fleet, H.E.R., Dua Lipa, Margo Price, Bebe Rexha, and Jorja Smith.
Hip-hop artists Kendrick Lamar and Drake received the most nominations with eight and seven, respectively. Singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile received six nominations.
The remaining categories (there are a ton) were also announced this morning, and a handful of artists we cover frequently on this site did, in fact, make the cut. Beck, Willie Nelson, St. Vincent, David Byrne, John Prine, Leon Bridges, Buddy Guy, Anderson .Paak, The Travelin’ McCourys, and Punch Brothers were also among those receiving nominations.
