Syd Barrett, founding member and lost genius of Pink Floyd, was born seventy-three years ago in Cambridge, England. Barrett, who died in 2006 of pancreatic cancer, had an immeasurable impact on rock music as we know it today, as he helped define the spirit of one of the most well-known bands of the previous century with his lyricism and innovation on Pink Floyd’s masterful debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn.
While Barrett’s struggle with mental health caused his exit from the band in 1967, Pink Floyd paid tribute to the eccentric hero with the 1975 release of Wish You Were Here. Off the album is the momentous “Shine On You Crazy Diamond,” a song that is regularly performed as an ode to the mythic lyricist and musician (such as String Cheese’s performance of the song with saxophonist Kenny Brooks shortly after Barrett’s death).
To celebrate the legacy of this infamous musician, we invite you to watch moe. and Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident perform “Shine On You Crazy Diamond” at Summer Camp last year. The video starts off with “Shine On,” then moves into moe.’s “Opium,” before closing with the Talking Heads’ “Making Flippy Floppy.”
