Funk/Dance duo Chromeo announced on Monday that they will return to Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre on May 31st for the sixth installment of their annual “Funk On The Rocks” concert. The one-night event will include a headlining performance from Chromeo with a full band (rare), in addition to supporting sets from Thievery Corporation (also with a full live band), Big Freedia, Adeline, and a funk video-DJ set courtesy of Peanut Butter Wolf.
The dance-friendly funk duo made a big return in 2018 with the release of their fifth studio album, Head Over Heels, which arrived back in mid-June via Big Beat/Atlantic Records. The album was their first since 2014’s White Women, and gave the group an excuse to tour across the country throughout the spring and summer months. The May 31st event is the only real performance date on the band’s 2019 tour schedule at the moment aside from a few DJ sets set to take place throughout the winter months.
Speaking of musical duos, Thievery Corporation has also given their fans plenty of new music in recent years. The electronic-based group mainly comprised of Rob Garza and Eric Hilton released The Temple of I & I back in February 2017, and followed that up with the arrival of Treasures from the Temple last April. The band’s 2015 performance of “Lebanese Blonde” at Red Rocks was included on the famous outdoor venue’s Red Rocks Live 77th-anniversary album released last year. Fans who won’t be able to make this year’s “Funk On The Rocks” can still catch Thievery Corporation drummer Jeff Franca at Dave Watts’ Birthday Bash at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver later this month as well.
As for Big Freedia, the singer, whose shows have become synonymous with a twerking team of backup dancers, was at New York’s Brooklyn Bowl over the weekend with a pair of headlining shows on Friday and Saturday nights.
