Legendary rock musician John Paul Jones celebrates his 73rd birthday today. Known primarily for playing bass as a co-founding member of Led Zeppelin, the multi-talented Jones is also adept at many other instruments which he played with the pioneering rock band and his other various musical endeavors.
Besides his membership in Led Zeppelin and the supergroup Them Crooked Vultures with Josh Homme and Dave Grohl, Jones has shared the stage with numerous other performers over the past several decades. Below is a collection of videos capturing Jones performing bass, mandolin, keyboards and guitar alongside many fellow talented players.
Jones can be seen playing mandolin with Jeff Tweedy & Friends in 2016 during a performance of Neil Young’s “The Losing End.” He supplies bass with Seasick Steve, Jack White and Alison Mosshart on “Write Me a Few Lines” in 2011. Jones participated in Warren Haynes’ Christmas Jam in 2008, joining Gov’t Mule on keyboards for Zeppelin’s “No Quarter” and playing mandolin with Haynes on “Going To California.” Jones also plays mandolin on “Ain’t No Tellin’” with Dave Rawlings Machine at a show in 2013. Finally, Jones plays acoustic guitar alongside frequent collaborator Sara Watkins on fiddle during a 2015 performance of “Long Hot Summer Day.” Check out the clips below:
