Panic En La Playa Ocho continued on Sunday at the Hard Rock Resort in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Widespread Panic headlined the action with a show that featured guest appearances from Luther Dickinson and Cody Dickinson.
Widespread Panic had a surprise in store right from the start, as the Georgia rockers dusted off their cover of the blues classic “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” for the first time since December 29, 2017. A pairing of “Radio Child” and “Up All Night” led into a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Cream Puff War.” Next up was “Gimme,” the instrumental “B Of D” and a run of “Weight Of The World,” “Steven’s Cat” and “Blackout Blues.” Panic ended their first set with The Guess Who’s “No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature.”
The six-piece came out of the gates strong by opening the second set with a fierce “Fishwater” featuring “Bust It Big” within. After “Blue Indian” gave way to “Honky Red” and “Space Wrangler,” it was time for the Dickinson boys to lend a hand. Luther and Cody aided Panic on Robert Johnson’s “Me & The Devil Blues” and R.L. Burnside’s “Snake Drive.” The latter was last played on November 3, 2005 in the days before Jimmy Herring and Duane Trucks joined the band.
Last night’s “Drums” segment featured Cody on washboard and led into “Sell Sell.” Widespread Panic closed out the frame with “Ain’t Life Grand” and served up an encore of “Nobody’s Loss” and “Red Hot Mama.” Panic En La Playa Ocho concludes tonight. Eric Krasno provided a mid-afternoon set that saw him joined by Ivan Neville and Leslie Mendelson while the Dickinson’s North Mississippi Allstars played a late-night set on Sunday.
