Neil Young Debuts 50 Year Old Song & Fits Bust Out Into State Theatre Show

138

Neil Young continued a solo tour on Tuesday night with his third of four shows at four different Minneapolis venues. Last night’s concert at the State Theatre featured the live debut of a 50-year-old song and a handful of bust outs and solo rarities.

Young played 22 songs last night and 12 weren’t performed at any of the first four shows of the run. The legendary musician opened with “Cinnamon Girl,” which hadn’t been played at a solo show since May 11, 2011. Rarity “Pocahontas” came next before the biggest surprise of the run: the live debut of “Running Dry (Requiem for The Rockets).” Neil recorded the tune for 1969’s Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and never performed “Running Dry” in concert … until last night. The obscurities kept coming as “White Line” appeared for the first time since a 2015 show with Promise Of The Real. “White Line” was last played at a solo show way back on June 2, 1999.

The beloved “Long May You Run” ended a string of five 2019 debuts to start the show. Soon thereafter came another surprise as Young dusted off “Southern Man” for the first time since October 24, 2015. Next up was the return of “Don’t Let It Bring You Down” after more than six years as it was last played on October 21, 2012. Farm Aid 2004 was the previous Neil solo show to feature “Don’t Let It Bring You Down.” Another bust out was waiting in the wings. Young pulled out “Stupid Girl” from 1975’s Zuma after a 23-year layoff. The Canadian performer played “Stupid Girl” 23 times with Crazy Horse and The Echos in 1996. Last night’s version was the only one that didn’t take place in 1996. Rare solo takes on classics “Fuckin’ Up” and “Down By The River” were among the final songs of the set, while “Tumbleweed” was in its usual spot as encore.
