On Friday, January 18th, Netflix and director Chris Smith (Jim & Andy: The Great Beyond) will release its highly-anticipated documentary about the ill-fated Fyre Festival.
The forthcoming documentary, titled FYRE: The Greatest Party That Never Happened, will provide the first in-depth examination of what exactly happened on that nearly desolate island in The Bahamas back in the spring of 2017. As it’s been reported and joked about many times by now, Fyre Festival was branded as a total rich kid destination event that would take place over two weekends in April and May of that year.
Contrary to the event’s promotional materials, which promised lavish bungalow camping quarters and scheduled performances by Blink 182, Disclosure, Major Lazer, Lil Yachty, the event would be over before it began as attendees arrived to the island only to find wild animals, unfinished stage production and housing, and food that even the laziest of lunchtime chefs would scoff at.
The documentary’s new trailer takes unlucky attendees and viewers back into one of music’s wildest failures with fan-shot videos and photos leading up to and during that fateful weekend, in addition to exclusive, never-before-seen interviews with attendees, staff, and local Bahamians who were reportedly exploited for on-site labor.
Smith and co. did their best to get co-founder Billy McFarland, who is currently serving six years in prison, to participate in the interviews, but it never happened. “We were set to film with him on two different occasions,” Smith told EW in an interview. “We had a camera and a crew and we were ready to go and then it would just get postponed right at the last minute. And then it just never ended up materializing.” According to Smith, “Billy wanted to get paid” for appearing in the film, which obviously wasn’t going to happen.
At the end of the day, “FYRE really played into this idea of perception versus reality,” Smith explained. “They created this amazing facade in their marketing materials, but in the same way that social media is often used to show the best parts of our lives, what was beneath the surface was something entirely different that had very dramatic real-world consequences.”
