Punch Brothers Share Pro-Shot Performance Of ‘Three Dots And A Dash’ From 2018 Radio Spot [Watch]

The Americana/Chamber-folk group known as Punch Brothers were a busy band of fellas in 2018. The band originally from New York City spent the second half of last year touring around North America and Europe in promotion of their fifth studio album, All Ashore, which arrived back on July 20th via Nonesuch Records. The progressive bluegrass album featured a mix of self-produced, organic-sounding folk tunes showcasing the band’s strong but often subtle use of their instruments which include mandolin, banjo, guitar, upright bass, and fiddle.

One of the promotional stops during the U.S. leg of their 2018 tour included an in-studio performance at a Minnesota public radio station The Current. The brief radio set presumably took place ahead of their show at the Palace Theatre on August 11th, where they performed a trio of songs from the new album including “Jumbo”, “Just Look At This Mess”, and “Three Dots and a Dash”. The radio station had shared the pro-shot video of “Jumbo” back in August, but on Saturday they released the footage of the band performing “Three Dots And A Dash”, which can be watched in full in the video below.

The song actually pulls its name from a post-WWII rum-based cocktail and also translates into “V” or “Victory” in Morse code. The band’s live performance shines with a vibrancy which can be pretty difficult to pull off when dealing with acoustic-based instruments. Yet, the band has no problem filling the isolated room with plenty of musical energy, almost to the point where the listener can feel like they’re in a concert hall rather than a radio studio. Thankfully the collective use of their organic instruments comes much more naturally to the band than translating Morse code is for the common listener.

The group also spent some time talking about the song and some of the other new material heard on the album during the radio visit. Their interview with the Minnesota radio station can be listened to in full here.

Punch Brothers will head back out on the road with their new collection of songs for a spring tour that’s scheduled to begin on March 14th in Ithaca, New York. They’re also scheduled to perform at the 2019 Telluride Bluegrass Festival in Colorado come June. Tickets for shows on their 2019 spring tour can be purchased here.
