The String Cheese Incident Dusts Off Rush Cover & Debuts Original On New Year’s Eve

168

The String Cheese Incident rung in 2019 and concluded a three-show New Year’s Run on New Year’s Eve at the 1st Bank Center in Broomfield, Colorado. Once again, SCI provided a visual spectacle to start the year and also worked a long-lost Rush cover and the debut of an original into their three-set home state performance.

The sextet opened the action with a sequence of “Outside Inside” and “Bollymunster.” Next up was bassist Keith Moseley recently debuted SCI Sound Lab contribution “Gone Crooked.” The classic “MLT” was then followed by keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth’s “My One & Only.” Cheese then jammed “Joyful Sound” into their first cover of Rush’s “Tom Sawyer” since July 26, 2015.

Michael Kang led the band through the debut of a song created in the Sound Lab to start the second set. SCI’s first take on “Into The Blue” was well-jammed. The frame continued with “Let’s Go Outside” and “One Step Closer” before Cheese worked “Windy Mountain” into “Sirens.” From there, the group ended the set by segueing from “Best Feeling” into the funk workout “Rosie.”

Bill Nershi took a moment at the beginning of the third set to discuss the band’s history. He said he takes pride in the original members still being in the group and acknowledged that while they had their issues in the past, they have been worked out. Nershi also mentioned they had been “worn down to a nub” by touring ahead of their hiatus in 2007. With that, Bill led a “Group Hoot” and SCI lit into “Colliding.” As usual, the band jammed “Colliding” while aerialists and inflatables flew above the crowd and dancers danced on stage. Fans helped provide the light show by using lights that flickered on and off, providing a wild visual. Nershi brought the song and 2018 to a close with a countdown before a big balloon drop. The rest of the closing stanza was a massive “Rollover” sequence containing a verse of Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “The Big Reveal” and “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” within. Cheese said farewell with a “Good Times Around The Bend” encore.
