Australia’s heavier bands have consistently surprised us recently with one genre-melding release after another, but Brissy boys, DZ Deathrays have taken it to another level.
Teaming up with Aussie hip-hop giants, Briggs, Trials, and Jesswar for ‘Front Row Hustle’, the result is a fun, dancey track that gives no rest for the ears — in a good way.
Trials’ production along with hooky verses from Briggs and Jesswar, and of course DZ’s classic rock sound driving through makes for one of our favourite collabs so far in 2019.
‘Front Row Hustle’ is a rework of DZ Deathrays’ ‘Afterglow’ from Bloody Lovely released last year.
“I kept all the grunt from the guitars and went to work with some 808’s, synths and a couple of crusty drum breaks. Add the 1/2 KO combo of Briggs + Jesswar to the mix and now I look like I been chewing on lemons all day,” says Trials.
Jesswar said she “really enjoyed mixing elements of hip-hop with rock and having to change gears”.
“The video shoot was especially dope, to be on set with Briggs, Trials and DZ, all together watching it come to life was an incredible experience!” she added.
Filmed in an underground Melbourne venue, the video shows the super group perform the song to fans who’d responded to a DZ callout.
The boys told triple j yesterday that album #4 is on the way this year. They revealed the album will feature material written with Kim Moyes of The Presets and there will be a track with The Bronx frontman, Matt Caughtran’s vocals.
Seemingly never stopping, DZ Deathrays kick off their huge national tour today in Geraldton.
