Dave Matthews Band focused on shows in their home state of Virginia over the course of 1992. Two years later they’d score a big hit with “What Would You Say” and by the next year would be one of the biggest touring acts in the country. A new previously uncirculated tape digitalized by Bill Kilby is the group’s set from September 19, 1992 at Phi Kappa Sigma in Blacksburg, Virginia, which can be streamed below as this week’s Throwback Thursday selection and a gives a taste of early Dave.
The lineup at the time found Matthews leading drummer Carter Beauford, fiddler Boyd Tinsley, saxophonist LeRoi Moore, bassist Stephan Lessard and keyboardist/harmonica wiz Peter Griesar. DMB’s set in Blacksburg began with a cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker.” Next up at the group’s Virginia Tech debut was a version of “Warehouse” dedicated to Erica featuring a portion of “Louie Louie” interspersed within.
Dave Matthews Band’s set continued with a cover of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.” Tinsley sang lead on what was a staple of the group’s live performances from 1991 – 1997. An unusual “Typical Situation,” the Boyd original “True Reflections” and soon-to-become classics “What Would You Say” and “Satellite” followed. “So Much To Say” closed out the set.
