One of the members of the hair metal tribute band known as Hairball found himself in quite the predicament during a recent performance, when his actual hair caught fire during a pyro stunt gone wrong. The popular tribute act, which routinely fills their setlists with songs originally penned by bands like KISS, Van Halen, and Aerosmith, was performing at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, IA last Friday when the hairspray-soaked head of guitarist Bobby Jensen caught a spark which quickly grew into a full-on fire.
The scary moment came during a portion of the performance when the band was covering KISS’ arena rock anthem, “Detroit Rock City”. Jensen, who was dressed in full Paul Stanley-esque stage attire for the cover, had filled his hair will flammable spray, which ultimately made it that much easier for the spark to turn into an actual flame. The moment was captured on video by a fan, and has since gone viral due to its potentially-lethal consequences had the band’s stage crew not acted in time.
Following the initial spark, the back of Jenson’s head quickly became engulfed by flames, although the guitarist didn’t miss a beat (literally) and kept singing and playing along as if nothing happened. As you can see in the video, Jenson’s bandmate even came over for a half-assed attempt at putting out the fire, but he gave up after a few quick swipes of the hand to no result. The band’s stage managers then came to Jenson’s aid with a fire extinguisher to put out what was left of the flames.
“I live an Evel Knievel kind of life, so if I’m on fire a little bit, I don’t care, that’s just part of the fun,” Jensen admitted about the incident in an interview following the show. “We always prepare for it. That’s why you didn’t see me freak out. I have 100% faith in my guys that they’ll get to me and put me out.”
Hairball will continue their 2019 tour schedule with a show at Central National Bank Center in Enid, OK on Saturday night. Fans can click here to purchase tickets to their upcoming shows.
