The latest episode of the Inside Out With Turner & Seth podcast features Dave Matthews Band saxophonist Jeff Coffin. Hosts Rob Turner and Seth Weiner spoke with Coffin about DMB, Bela Fleck & The Flecktones, Umphrey’s McGee and more backstage at The Tabernacle in Atlanta during UM’s latest New Year’s Run.
Jeff Coffin talks about his past, present and future on the podcast. He tells the story of how attending a concert turned into his gig with The Flecktones from 1997 – 2008. The saxophonist went on to discuss the call he received asking him to sit-in with the Dave Matthews Band while LeRoi Moore recovered from an ATM accident. Coffin recalled the day he learned Moore had passed away and shared memories of the night’s emotional DMB show at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
The Massachusetts resident joined DMB shortly after LeRoi’s death and went into detail about the process of learning the group’s songs. He also spoke about a recent change to the lineup when Boyd Tinsley left the ensemble. Dave Matthews Band played a show before the Super Bowl in Minnesota last year that included a trainwreck version of “Ants Marching.” Jeff explained what happened which was followed by audio of the rough start to the classic tune.
Dave Matthews Band went on to add keyboardist Buddy Strong to the lineup ahead of Summer Tour 2018. Coffin explained how the year was one of rebirth for DMB and how he feels they’ve never been better than they are right now. Other topics hit upon are Jeff’s role as a music educator, his traditional sit-ins with Umphrey’s McGee during their New Year’s Runs and his thoughts on UM’s progression.
