John Prine is the subject of a feature-length documentary film that will soon be given a theatrical release. Tentatively titled John Prine: Hello In There, the film directed by Zachary Fuhrer and produced by Rolling Stone‘s Patrick Doyle profiles the 72-year-old singer-songwriter ahead of the release of last year’s Grammy-nominated album The Tree Of Forgiveness.

Currently in post-production, Sony Pictures Classics has not set a theatrical release date for the Prine documentary. The film includes interviews with several of Prine’s collaborators and contemporaries as well as recent acts he’s influenced such as Margo Price, Jason Isbell and Sturgill Simpson. This edition of Saturday Stream presents a Spotify Playlist of musicians covering John Prine songs.

The playlist begins with the Broken Hearts & Dirty Windows tribute album that features the likes of Justin Vernon, My Morning Jacket, The Avett Brothers, Old Crow Medicine Show, Sara Watkins, Drive-By Truckers and more covering Prine’s songs. Those tracks are followed by covers of Prine originals by Johnny Cash, Zac Brown Band, Todd Snider, Loretta Lynn, Miranda Lambert and Prine’s late friend and early supporter, Steve Goodman. Prine returns the favor by covering Goodman later in the set.

Several versions of Prine’s classics “Angel From Montgomery,” “Hello In There,” “Paradise,” “Sam Stone” and “Souvenirs” were included with tracks performed by Bonnie Raitt, Susan Tedeschi, Joan Baez, Strangefolk, Midnight North with members of Twiddle, Buddy Miller & Brandi Carlile, Kris Kristofferson, Dwight Yoakam, The Everly Brothers, David Allan Coe, Lilly Haitt & Aaron Lee Tasjan and 10,000 Maniacs, among others.
