On Sunday, Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band wrapped up their three-night weekend run with a stop at Seattle, WA’s Showbox. Phil Lesh and his son Grahame (Lesh), along with Ross James, Alex Koford, Jason Crosby, and Elliot Peck paid their respects to Seattle’s beloved punk band Nirvana, by mashing up a Grateful Dead and Nirvana song to close the band’s second set.

The sextet opened up their first set with “Me & My Uncle”, before moving forward with “Pride Of Cucamonda” led by Phil Lesh on vocals. The TFB honored another famous Seattle nativeJimi Hendrix, with a cover of “The Wind Cries Mary”, allowing Ross James to step up in the spotlight for the first time of the evening. Alex Koford then led his bandmates through a feel-good rendition of “They Love Each Other”, allowing Grahame Lesh and James to dig deep into some intricate guitar solos. “TLEO” led way to a cover of Crosby, Stills & Nash’s “Teach Your Children”, highlighted by some delicate vocal harmonizing between Grahame, Koford, and Peck. The band kept on chugging forward with a hard-hitting “Samson & Delilah”, before delivering an interesting cover of Lucinda Williams’ “I Lost It” led by Peck. Peck showed the Emerald City what she was made of, belting out the vocals with tenacity and soul, before the six-piece brought their first set to a close with “Uncle John’s Band”.

Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family came back out to open their second set with a take on “How Sweet It Is”, before continuing in their sweet theme with a cover of Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane”. Captain Phil took the lead, powering his young band full-steam ahead with a “Mason’s Children” sandwich, tossing in the middle a cover of The Chantay’s “Pipeline. The most improv-heavy segment of the show came next with a spacey “Terrapin Suite”, which featured the closing “Jack O’ Roses” segment. The dynamic trio of Grahame, Alex, and Elliot stepped up to their mics to share vocal duties on “Scarlet Begonias”, which was followed up by a cover of The Band’s “Up On Cripple Creek”.  A tender take on “Comes A Time” worked its way into “Turn On Your Love Light”, before the Terrapin Family Band brought the second set to a close with the indefinite highlight of the evening. Multi-instrumentalist Jason Crosby picked up a guitar as he stepped up to his mic to lead his bandmates through a mashup of Nirvana’s “Lithium” and the Grateful Dead’s “Friend Of The Devil”. A lone encore of “Not Fade Away” was the perfect way to cap off a stellar Phil Lesh and the Terrapin Family Band show in the Emerald City.
