Tedeschi Trucks Band – Signs
The Scoop: The Tedeschi Trucks Band has gone through a lot of loss since the release of Let Me Get By in 2016. Derek Trucks’ uncle Butch Trucks died as did his ABB mate Gregg Allman and mentors such as Col. Bruce Hampton and Leon Russell. As such, loss is one of the topics dealt with on the 12-piece’s new album, Signs, out today on Fantasy Records. The 11-track LP was produced by Derek, Jim Scott and Bobby Tis at the TTB’s Swamp Raga facility in Florida. Warren Haynes, Oliver Wood and Doyle Bramhall II are among the guests who appear on Signs. “This is the first record we’ve made where, when I listen to it, it puts me in a specific place,” said Trucks in a statement. “It puts me in a zone and hits some raw nerves.”
Hayes Carll – What It Is
The Scoop: Singer-songwriter Hayes Carll reconnected with Brad Jones, who produced Carll’s 2008 album Trouble In Mind and 2011’s KMAG YOYO, and returned to Alex The Great Studio in Nashville to make What It Is. Carll’s fiancee, singer-songwriter Allison Moorer, was enlisted as co-producer on the follow-up to his 2016 album Lovers And Leavers. Co-writing credits across Carll’s sixth studio album’s 12 tracks were shared by Matraca Berg, Charlie Mars, Adam Landry, Lolo and Moorer. “I want to dig in so this life doesn’t just pass me by,” Carll stated. “The more engaged I am the more meaning it all has. I want that to be reflected in the work.”
Broken Social Scene – Let’s Try The After – Vol 1
The Scoop: The latest from Canadian collective Broken Social Scene is a five-song EP Let’s Try After – Vol 1. Four of the songs on the follow-up to their fifth studio album, 2017’s Hug Of Thunder, were produced and mixed by Nyles Spencer. The track “1972” was co-produced by BSS members Charles Spearin and Joe Chiccarelli. The lead single “All I Want” features BSS member Andrew Whiteman of Apostle Of Hustle on lead vocals. “The point is to keep going,” BSS leader Kevin Drew stated. “We have more to give. These songs have lived beside us and become our commencement party while continuing together. We hope you enjoy this EP for you and me.”
Shook Twins – Some Good Lives
The Scoop: Sisters Laurie Shook and Katelyn Shook, a.k.a. Shook Twins are back with their fourth full length studio album. Some Good Lives is out today on Dutch Records featuring 14 songs. The process started in the twins’ hometown of Portland, Oregon in 2016. They enlisted their full band of drummer Barra Brown, bassist Sydney Nash and multi-instrumentalist Niko Slice to record at Hallowed Halls in Portland. “It took us a long time to find the band that we wanted to record these songs with and for the songs to fully mature,” said Laurie. “Once Barra, Sydney, and Niko joined us, we really started to explore what our music could be. These amazing players helped us realize that we could be more than just ‘folk pop’. We started adding other genres to the word like ‘disco,’ ‘psychedelic,’ ‘funk,’ and ‘soul.’ We really honed in on a new sound.”
