Deer Tick – Mayonnaise
The Scoop: Deer Tick went with an interesting approach for their latest studio effort, Mayonnaise. The 13-track collection serves as a companion to the pair of self-titled albums that the Rhode Island-birthed band put out in 2017. The four-piece bar-rock act recorded a number of covers that they had played on tour in support of the LPs, including takes on songs by George Harrison and The Velvet Underground. Additionally, the band laid down alternative versions of songs from their previous two records along with a handful of brand tracks for good measure.
Beirut – Gallipoli
The Scoop: Zach Condon returned to the Farfisa organ to record the new Beirut album Gallipoli. The vintage instrument informed the sound of Beirut’s debut album, 2006’s Glag Orkester and its 2007 follow-up The Flying Club Cup. Condon worked again with producer Gabe Wax, who also produced the last Beirut album, 2015’s No No No. Initial sessions were held in New York City and Berlin, Germany and later – after Condon recovered from a broken arm – additional recording took place in Gallipoli, Italy. Condon and his band mates spent “an intense month of 12 to 16-hour days in the studio” while taking inspirational “day trips around the coastline.” The 12-track record out on 4AD “is unintentionally more visceral than Beirut’s more recent albums, alive with an energy that is further enhanced by every creak and groan of their instruments, every detuned note, and all amp buzz and technical malfunction being left in the cracks of the songs.”
