Shook Twins Share New Single ‘Figure It Out’

252

The indie-folk group Shook Twins released a brand-new single, “Figure It Out,” featuring Gregory Alan Isakov. Premiered via Popmatters, this latest single promotes the Shook Twins’ fourth full-length studio album, Some Good Lives, which is due out on February 15 via Dutch Records.

Said Laurie Shook (banjo, vocals) about the song in a press release:

This song strung itself together gradually. One that doesn’t start with an idea or concept, but unfolds as the lines fall out one at a time. It has a wintery loneliness to it. To me it’s about integrity, and a willingness to let yourself continuously learn, even if it’s learning the same things over and over. We don’t always ‘figure it out’ the first time so we must allow ourselves to ‘Figure it out again some more.

“Figure It Out,” as well as the majority of the other songs off the forthcoming Some Good Lives, was recorded in the Shook Twins’ hometown of Portland, Oregon, at Hallowed Halls. While the twins, Laurie (banjo, vocals) and Katelyn Shook (vocals, guitar), are the most visible members of the ensemble, the project’s full band, featuring drummer Barra Brown, bassist Sydney Nash, and guitarist and mandolinist Niko Slice, was on hand throughout the recording process of their forthcoming album.

After the initial recording session for “Figure It Out,” Laurie Shook traveled to Boulder, Colorado, where Isakov finished the song by adding textural and ambient elements.

As Laurie Shook told Popmatters,

[Isakov] has such an amazing way of creating emotional soundscapes. It was fun to try my hand at engineering as he showed me how to move the noises around until they made sense and sounded right, then Niko [Slice] helped hone it in even more. This was a really collaborative song.

Some Good Lives is currently available for pre-order via the Shook Twins’ Bandcamp. Stream the Shook Twins’ newly released single, “Figure It Out,” featuring Gregory Alan Isakov below.
