Umphrey’s McGee Dusts Off The Police Cover In Detroit

149

Umphrey’s McGee began a two-night run at The Fillmore Detroit on Friday. The prog-jam rockers reached in their bag of tricks to dusting off “Smell The Mitten” and The Police’s “Canary In A Coalmine” for the first time in 2019.

The sextet got their night going in The Motor City with the pairing of “There’s No Crying In Mexico” and “Roulette,” the old-school classic made its way into their setlist for the fourth time since a one-off in 2017. Umphrey’s then nodded to their location by working in a jam on KISS’ “Detroit Rock City” during “Utopian Fir.” The setlist staple would segue straight into the recently revived rarity “Breaker,” which was played for just the sixth time ever last night. A seamless run on a trio of classics tunes – “Booth Love,” “Out Of Order” and “The Bottom Half” – brought the frame to a close.

The six-piece act looked to “The Silent Type” to get their second set off the ground. Umphrey’s went to back-to-back bust outs next with “Smell The Mitten” and “Canary In A Coalmine.” The former had been sitting on the shelf since its lone performance on March 17 of last year. The Police cover from their 1980 LP Zenyatta Mondatta was last attempted in August of 2018. Set-closing takes on “In The Kitchen” and “Nothing Too Fancy” followed. Umphrey’s McGee delivered a one-song encore with “Slacker” putting the cap on their first of two in Detroit.
