Gusts of snow cover thousands of music lovers huddling like penguins waiting to see their favorite bluegrass bands at the WinterWonderGrass festival. Yearly, Bonfire Productions, founders of Campout for the Cause, head to their favorite ski resorts throughout the country to throw a massive bluegrass bash in the middle of ski season.

The Infamous Stringdusters, Trampled by Turtles, and Railroad Earth headlined the three-day event that took over the town of Steamboat Springs. “The WWG festival is something that is very unique,” says Andy Falco, guitarist for The Infamous Stringdusters. “You’re playing with acoustic instruments made of wood, in extreme temperatures, you struggle to stay in tune. Musically speaking, it’s challenging but there is so much energy in the audience, it warms you up.”

The spirit revolving around the festival is one of peace, love, and sustainability. This all-ages show has a reputation for caring about the carbon footprint it leaves on the planet. Attendees are given metal cups to be used throughout the festival, doubling as a souvenir. Festival organizers also contribute compostable tasting cups for the three hours of craft beer and cider samplings, which happen daily throughout the weekend of the festival.

The next stop on the WWG festival circuit is Squaw Valley in Lake Tahoe. Festival-goers can look forward to the musical stylings of Greensky Bluegrass, Trampled by Turtles and Leftover Salmon. For more information visit www.winterwondergrass.com.
