Bob Weir And Wolf Bros Debut “Desolation Row”, “Black Muddy River” In Tour Finale [Full Audio]

131

On Saturday night, Bob Weir and Wolf Bros completed their early-2019 tour with a performance at North Charleston Performing Arts Center in North Charleston, SC. Even at the tail end of their tour, the Grateful Dead guitarist and his Wolf brethren continued to add new songs to their ever-growing repertoire.

The performance began with a rousing rendition of “Bertha” followed by Bob Weir/Rob Wasserman collab “The Winners” and Marty Robbins‘ “El Paso”. Next up came the biggest surprise of the evening, an extended cover of Bob Dylan‘s “Desolation Row”. While Bob Weir and Wolf Bros frequently incorporate Dylan tunes into their setlists, this performance marked their first-ever attempt at “Desolation Row”. This also marked Weir’s first live performance of the song since he played it with RatDog more than five years ago at Shea’s Performing Arts Center in Buffalo, NY on 3/4/14.

The set continued with Blue Mountain solo track “Lay My Lily Down” before rounding out with a trio of Grateful Dead favorites in “Passenger”, “Wharf Rat”, and “Deal”.

Weir, Jay Lane, and Don Was returned to the stage for their second set with a Weir/John Barlow classic, “The Music Never Stopped”. As they’ve made a habit of doing in recent performances, Weir and company steered the song into “Easy Answers” before returning to “The Music Never Stopped” territory for a brief reprise. Next, Weir’s go-to pairing of “Lost Sailor” and “Saint of Circumstance” kicked off a seamlessly segued segment that would last the remainder of the set, moving through “He’s Gone”, “The Other One”, and “Days Between” before finishing strong with “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider”. Finally, to round out the show (and the tour), Weir, Lane, and Was returned for their encore with the Wolf Bros debut of the Dead’s In The Dark (1987) cut, “Black Muddy River”.
