Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi recently appeared on the SiriusXM music talk show Debatable on the Volume channel. SiriusXM shared video featuring some of Derek and Susan’s chat with hosts Mark Goodman and Alan Light, including a portion about the loss of co-founding member Kofi Burbridge.

Derek discussed the therapeutic nature of music and said he’s glad the band was on the road when Kofi passed. He mentioned the TTB tours in a bus called Old Red that has 1.3 million miles on it. “Kofi was in that bus for us for a million miles, so there’s something nice about being there,” Trucks said adding that he and Mike Mattison were in a band with Kofi for 16 years. The guitarist also mentioned songs have taken on a new meaning in the wake of Burbridge’s passing. “Everything feels more in your face and all the lyrics take on a different meaning. You can’t play them every night,” Trucks said. “You have to ask Sue, ‘what are you feeling up to singing tonight, what can you wrap your head around tonight?’ It’s one thing to stand with a guitar and play — which is tough enough — but to say the words is another thing.”

The guitarist also shared memories of contributing to a Jethro Tull tribute record. Derek added to a cover of “Cat’s Squirrel” from 1996’s To Cry You A Song: A Collection Of Tull Tales when he was a teenager. Trucks didn’t realize Charlie Musselwhite also appears on the track as Derek just overdubbed his part. Watch his story from that day in which he contributed to an album Col.
