Former Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour turned 73-years-young earlier this week on March 6th. In celebration, members of Metallica honored the British guitarist with a fitting birthday tribute cover of “Run Like Hell” during their performance at the Sprint Center in Kansas City, MO on Wednesday.

The energizing cover of Pink Floyd’s 1980 single came during the “Rob & Kirk” portion of Metallica’s concert when bassist Robert Trujillo and guitarist Kirk Hammett stepped up to their respective microphones for their nightly duet/solo performance.

“We want to celebrate David Gilmour!” Trujillo yelled in exuberance into the mic to start his and Hammett’s cover performance of the classic rock song. “73 years old! Let’s have some fun with this!”

The two then proceeded to tear into their own rendition of the song, which originally appeared on Pink Floyd’s 1979 masterpiece, The Wall. Hammett could be seen sporting an ear-to-ear grin as he ferociously strummed the song’s repeating opening riff while Trujillo asked the audience and his bandmate if they were ready for what was about to go down. The two proceeded to take the audience on a dark and heavy psych-rock experience with a version of the song that could only be shared by two of rock’s heaviest hitters.
