The first weekend of Mike Gordon‘s March tour came to a close on Sunday night at Basement East in Nashville. Gordon followed an opening night featuring four songs his five-piece hadn’t played before and a Saturday night show containing two additional debuts by unveiling a Tom Petty cover last night.
Mike, guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter and percussionist Craig Myers kicked off Sunday’s show with “Equilibrium” off 2017’s OGOGO. The band then pulled “Long Black Line” from 2014’s Overstep and covered Fiona Apple’s “Sleep To Dream.” It was then back to OGOGO for “Stealing Jamaica.” Next, Mike led the group through their debut version of “Wildflowers,” the title track from Tom Petty’s 1994 solo album. Gordon and his band had previously played Petty’s 1993 hit “Mary Jane’s Last Dance” a handful of times.
The tour debut of “Meat” from the Phish repertoire followed “Wildflowers.” Murawski then led “Victim 3D” ahead of a “Face” to close the set. Gordon went with “Pendulum” from OGOGO to begin the second set. Next, came the second performances of two songs debuted earlier this tour: “Sughn Never Sets” and “Acid Man.” Mike and the band followed a cover of Jon Cleary’s “Got To Be More Careful” with “Marissa” and “Up & Down” off OGOGO. It was back to Overstep for “Tiny Little World” before the Phish classic “Destiny Unbound” ended the frame. The quintet went with the recently debuted “I Am Random” as the evening’s lone encore.
