Mike Gordon Offers More Debuts In Asheville

101

Mike Gordon‘s first solo run of 2019 rolled on Saturday at The Orange Peel in Asheville. The Phish bassist continued the trend he started on the opening night of the tour by debuting even more new tunes.

The five-piece act that includes guitarist Scott Murawski, drummer John Kimock, keyboardist Robert Walter and percussionist Craig Myers looked to OGOGO cut “Victim” to open up their evening. Gordon & Co. then offered up the inaugural version of Scott’s “Put Down The Phone.” The Myers original “Angatta” followed with “Looking For Clues” sandwiched between Phish tunes “555” and “Yarmouth Road.” The quartet then served up their second debut with Murawski/Gordon’s “I Am Random” as “Go Away” brought the set to a close.

Gordon would continue to mine his most recent studio album, delivering takes on OGOGO tracks “Whirlwind” and “Steps” to help start the second stanza. The third debut of the night came at the midway point of the frame with the new original “My Favorite Mistake.” Phish’s “Sugar Shack” was offered up for just fourth time since 2016 with the pairing of “Surface” and “Crazy Sometimes,” which included teases of “Frankenstein” and a number of classic television theme songs, bringing the set to an end. Gordon looked to Rancid’s “Ruby Soho” as the lone encore at The Orange Peel.
