Mumford & Sons were at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, OH over the weekend for the latest stop on their ongoing world tour in support of their 2018 Delta LP. It was during the band’s 19-song performance on Saturday when they shared a cover of Nine Inch Nails‘ ballad, “Hurt”, during their lengthy encore.
The inclusion of the popular industrial rock song into the folk-rock band’s setlist on Saturday was primarily a musical tribute to NIN frontman Trent Reznor, who began his career within the Cleveland music scene after dropping out of high school. The track was included on Nine In Nails’ 1994 album, The Downward Spiral, which happened to celebrate its 25th anniversary the day prior to the show on March 8th.
The performance of “Hurt” came two songs into the band’s four-song encore, and acted as their only cover of the evening. The live rendition of the dark ballad began as a solo featuring Marcus Mumford on guitar and vocals before the rest of the band joined in as the song continued to build. The cover came to a fitting end when Mumford, a native of England, stated over the microphone, “Thank you Cleveland for Nine Inch Nails. And thank you to the U.S. for Johnny Cash.”

The band continues their Delta Tour on Monday night with a scheduled performance at Nationwide Arena in Columbus, OH. The latest North American leg of shows on the tour is set to continue until the end of the month before Mumford & Sons head to Europe throughout the rest of spring and into early summer.
