As reported, trombonist/vocalist Natalie Cressman and Brazilian composer/guitarist and vocalist Ian Faquini will issue the 10-track studio album Setting Rays Of Summer via Cressman Music on April 5. The pair will soon embark on a tour in support of the LP and JamBase is pleased to premiere video of Natalie and Ian’s version of Pixinguinha’s “Ainda Me Recordo” filmed in-studio.

“This is a song by Pixinguinha, one of the great choro composers, that dates back to the 1930’s,” Cressman told JamBase about the tune. “I’ve been getting more into learning choro lately, as the Brazilian style fascinatingly has a lot of parallels to American ragtime and early jazz, which were developing during the same time period. The melodies and bass lines are super demanding on trombone and Ian and I have a lot of fun arranging these instrumental pieces for the duo since it’s kind of an unconventional instrumentation. It’s tricky to pull off but we love performing them live and seeing how these songs stand the test of time, as people respond to hearing this style of music for the first time.”

Setting Rays Of Summer features original material written in Portuguese, English and French. The duo recorded the 10-track LP at Cressman Music Studios, Natalie’s father’s facility in San Francisco. Natalie and Ian tracked the album together live, in one room, with few overdubs. The album is currently available for pre-order via Bandcamp.

Natalie Cressman and Ian Faquini begin their April tour at The Mayfair Hotel in Los Angeles on April 4. From there, the pair visit Oakland ahead of a run of shows in Oregon that includes stops in Zigzag, Eugene and Portland. Cressman and Faquini continue the jaunt at the Royal Room in Seattle on April 13 and return to Portland on April 14. It’s then off to Colorado for performances in Denver and Fort Collins.
