On Valentine’s Day this year, Papadosio performed a special show at Birmingham, Alabama’s WorkPlay Theatre as part of their extended Spring Tour 2019. Now, the Asheville, North Carolina-based five-piece has released a pro-shot video of the February 14 performance’s opening number, “Holy Heck,” featuring visuals and lighting from Dustin Klein (also known as VIDEOmeTRY).
The clip begins with a four-minute improvisational section, with the show starting simply with a minimalist synth loop. From there, the band begins to layer over the sample, creating a spacious and ambient sound before landing in the main guitar riff from “Holy Heck.” The fan-favorite song, which appeared on the group’s 2008 EP, By The Light Of The Stars, received the full improvisational treatment, transitioning from the rock-inspired tune into a jam that spanned over ten minutes.
The jam deftly jumps between sounds, moving from gritty, bass-heavy electronic-infused segments to more melodic, synthy portions — though a sinister tone remains consistent throughout. Toward the end of the improvisation, the group returns to the major key of “Holy Heck,” presenting the song’s main theme with a hard-rock edge. After the show opener, Papadosio used the tune to move into “Ritual,” off their 2015 release Extras In A Movie.
