On March 1, Spafford continued their Winter Tour 2019 with a stop at George’s Majestic Lounge in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Now, the Arizona-born four-piece has released pro-shot video of their rendition of “The Postman” from their Friday night showing.
Ringing in at just over 19 minutes, the group’s expansive take on “The Postman” fell during the second set following the frame’s opening number, “Shake You Loose.” During the performance, the band moved through the melodic opening segment, eventually landing in an extended jam highlighted by Andrew “Red” Johnson on the keys that verged on dark. With gritty synths and commanding guitar licks from Brian Moss, the quartet finished the song with a dramatic build before closing the set with a 20-minute cover of John Hiatt’s “Memphis in the Meantime” and original “Backdoor Funk.”
In addition to this standout number, the show also featured Spafford’s second-ever performance of Herbie Hancock classic “Cantaloupe Island”, following up their debut rendition during their 2016 Halloween run in Arizona. The song off 1964’s Empyrean Isles was placed within original “All In” to close the first set, with the sandwich spanning nearly 30 minutes.
