Dave Matthews Band Covers Steve Miller Band & Splits ‘Lie In Our Graves’ In Italy

147

Dave Matthews Band paid tribute to the Steve Miller Band and broke up “Lie In Our Graves” into two parts during the penultimate show of their European tour. Wednesday’s performance took place at Mediolanum Forum in Assago, Italy.

The septet went heavy on material from 1994’s Under The Table & Dreaming by fitting six songs off the LP into Wednesday night’s setlist. Under The Table & Dreaming track “What Would You Say” served as opener of a 19-song set. There were plenty of time-tested originals that followed along with covers of Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and Steve Miller Band’s “Fly Like An Eagle.” “Jimi Thing” was the improvisational highlight of the night and gave way to a full version of the Steve Miller Band hit from the group’s 1976 album of the same name. While DMB had jammed “Jimi Thing” into “Fly Like An Eagle” previously on the tour, DMB Almanac marked those versions as “partial.”

“Lie In Our Graves” was the evening’s lone tour debut and came ahead of the “Pantala Naga Pampa” into “Rapunzel” that closed the main set. A reprise of the song kicked off an encore that also included “Ants Marching.” DMB hadn’t split “Lie In Our Graves” since 2016. Next up is the tour finale on Saturday in Lisbon.
