Gov’t Mule dusted off an Etta James cover on Tuesday night as part of their performance at the Bourbon Theatre in Lincoln, Nebraska. The quartet focused on originals until ending the show with a run of covers that included James’ “Out Of The Rain.”
Warren Haynes & Co. began the show with a first set consisting fully of originals from throughout the band’s career including “Stone Cold Rage,” “Thorazine Shuffle,” “Mr. High & Mighty” and “Brand New Angel” as well as “Soulshine” from the guitarist’s time in The Allman Brothers Band. The second set took the same form until three covers brought the frame to a close. Up first was “Out Of The Rain,” a song written by Tony Joe White and initially released by Etta James on 1990’s Stickin’ To My Guns. Gov’t Mule last performed the song way back on November 12, 2009 as per Setlist.FM. Haynes did fit “Out Of The Rain” into his “Q & Play” set at January’s Island Exodus event in Jamaica.
After ending the second set with takes on Robert Johnson’s “Come On In My Kitchen” and “Gonna Send You Back To Georgia” by Timmy Shaw, Gov’t Mule said farewell with a lone encore of “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” Listen to Mule’s version of “Out Of The Rain” from the band’s 2010 live album Mulennium:
