Tuesday night’s Guster show at the Neighborhood Theatre in Charlotte, North Carolina featured a fun bit of audience participation. The quartet invited up two fans for a “harmonica duel” that ended with Guster and their guests covering some of “But Anyway” by Blues Traveler.
Concert attendees “Will” and “Spencer” wrote to the band asking to play harmonica on “Backyard” from 2003’s Keep It Together. The studio version of the song features harmonica, which made it a good fit for the pair. Frontman Ryan Miller directed traffic, as he guided the duo through the right timing to each take a “big harmonica solo.” Will and Spencer came through to huge applause from the crowd.
After Guster finished “Backyard,” Miller asked Will and Spencer to stick around while the band played a Blues Traveler song. Drummer Brian Rosenworcel jumped up from behind the kit to sing the first verse and chorus of “But Anyway” from Traveler’s self-titled debut album. Will and Spencer each chimed in on harp after Rosenworcel was finished belting out the lyrics. Watch fan-shot video of how it went down captured by Dan Wuori:
