Southern California Sees Drastic Spike In Herpes Diagnoses Following Coachella

Turn on the news these days and one will likely hear a story about a resurgence in Measles across the United States at the moment. While that may be concerning, it’s not quite as worrisome as the number of Herpes diagnoses spreading throughout southern California following both weekends of Coachella the past two weeks.

A new report from TMZ reveals the number of Herpes cases in the region around Indio, CA, where Coachella takes place, has seen a drastic bump (2,083% increase) since the first weekend of the highly-attended pop festival on April 12th-14th. According to the ATD diagnosis app HerpAlert, which allows anyone who thinks they’re infected, to submit photos of their situation to medical professionals to review and diagnose, 1,105 Herpes cases have been reported in Indio, Palm Desert, Coachella Valley, Los Angeles, Orange, and San Diego counties. Those areas of southern California happen to be where most of this year’s Coachella attendees call home. Astoundingly, HerpAlert serviced up to 250 patients during the first two days of the festival alone!

While geographics do help to water down the sample size (surely not all of the 1,105 cases submitted via HerpAlert came from Coachella attendees), it is still a troubling number of STD diagnoses. The report also goes on to state that this is the largest spike in HerpAlert Herpes cases since the weekend of the 2018 Oscars in Los Angeles, where there were 60 cases per day.

There’s certainly plenty of data here to concern any parent or health professional. It’s worth noting that brands like Trojan Condoms regularly advertise at major music events by way of airplanes circling above the festivals with a large sign in tow. Unfortunately, all that airplane fuel seems to be going to waste as young music fans continue to partake in such recklessness as unprotected sex.

The moral of the story: Stop hooking up on the Ferris wheel y’all!
