Trey Anastasio Band Performs ‘Ghost’ In New Haven

Trey Anastasio Band continued their short weekend warmup run on Saturday at the College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Connecticut. The singer-guitarist mixed Phish favorites with material from his solo catalog. The night also featured Anastasio leading his side-project through “Ghost” for the first time as a full band.

The eight-piece ensemble looked to “Set Your Soul Free” to get their night in the Nutmeg State going. “Sometime After Sunset” and the TAB classic “Alive Again” followed. “Blaze On” made its way into the setlist for the second night in a row after it was debuted with horns on Friday at the Beacon Theatre. Anastasio would stick Phish material serving up the Picture Of Nectar instrumental “Magilla” next. “Gotta Jibbo,” “1977” from Latin hip artist Ana Tijoux, “Dark & Down” and a spirited “Last Tube” rounded out the opening frame.

Anastasio & Co. tapped “Everything’s Right” to get their second stanza off the ground. The horn section then left the stage as the rest of the band dug in on “Ghost.” Anastasio has performed the majority of the versions of the song outside of Phish acoustically dating back to its debut during TAB’s November 11, 2005 gig in Utica, New York, when he offered it up as duo with Mike Gordon. The Phish frontman also included “Ghost” in his setlists during last year’s run with the Trey Anastasio Trio. Funky versions of “Mozambique,” “Nights Speaks To A Woman” and “Sand” along with a high-energy romp through “46 Days” highlighted the set.

Anastasio emerged for solo to begin the extended encore performing solo acoustic takes on a trio of Phish staples offering up a tender “Strange Design” along with “Limb By Limb” and “Chalk Dust Torture.” The rest of the band would join him as they closed out the evening with Gorillaz’s “Clint Eastwood” and “Rise/Come Together.”
