Over the weekend, Little Steven and The Disciples of Soul performed an album release party at Beverly Hills, California’s Saban Theater. Toward the end of the show, which celebrated the band’s new Summer of Sorcery record, Little Steven and company surprised fans by welcoming out Bruce Springsteen to the stage.
The Boss made a three-song cameo on the night of May 4, starting off with his own “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out.” Following the energetic, collaborative rendition of the 1975 Born To Run classic, the collective also worked through a take on “Sun City,” a 1985 anti-apartheid protest song written by Van Zandt. The performance marked the first time the E Street Band leader had performed the track with Little Steven. To close out his guest appearance, Bruce lent his vocals to another Little Steven-penned track “I Don’t Want To Go Home.”
While the sit-in was a success, many fans were not necessarily surprised by the special guest’s appearance. Outside of Van Zandt’s long-running tenure as a guitarist and mandolinist with the E Street Band, Springsteen formerly performed with Little Steven and the Disciples of Soul when the 15-piece ensemble came together in 2017. Furthermore, Springsteen had previously announced that he would be in Los Angeles for a Netflix event the day after the showcase.
