Flamingosis‘ DJ set at The Arc in New York City on Thursday night was arguably the stand-out performance from the late-night weeknight event hosted by one of the city’s newest venues.
The local DJ was the second of three scheduled to spin throughout the event, which welcomed curious fans and locals into the brand new Long Island City warehouse-turned-concert venue. The size of the new event space is undeniably impressive. Just from an eyeball’s glance, there could have been around 250sh people in the large concrete room by the time Flamingosis took to the DJ booth shortly after 11 p.m. Even with a packed area making up what would be the dance floor for the night and dozens of more fans flooding onto “the stage” surrounding Flamingosis, there was still plenty of space left throughout the entire large room to place future food/merch vendors, a second stage, or even a skate park.

The casual setup inside The Arc certainly matches the looser, more casual attitudes of the younger generations beginning to populate the Long Island City and the surrounding western Queens neighborhoods where the venue is located. There were structure and security, but the event never felt as strictly-ruled as some concerts seem to do these days. The staging area where the DJ booth was located was set up on the floor level, in front of what could have been a 30 ft.-long curtain acting as the backdrop for projections being played on loop throughout the night. The feeling of being in a converted industrial-based warehouse is clear from the moment you walk in, but the venue never feels cold or uninviting.
The spontaneity of Flamingosis’s set also allowed the event to feel more like a neighborhood party. There were dancers who looked like just another fan in the audience before performing semi-choreographed routines in front of his DJ booth. An occasional horn player emerging from the crowded stage to play out some notes in sync with what was coming out of the speakers at that moment.
