Over the last year or so, Grateful Shred has established themselves as one of the premier Grateful Dead tribute bands along the west coast. The six-piece band, which utilizes an unorthodox three guitarists rather than the usual two, is the latest act to appear on the popular Jam in the Van performance series, which was filmed during their recent stints at Los Angeles’ concert venues The Echo and Echoplex during their SHRED 420 concerts which took place late last month.
For their return to the online video series, the band pulled out a cover of “Brokedown Palace”, the beloved Jerry Garcia ballad off the band’s 1970 American Beauty LP, in addition to a relaxed rendition of “Cold Rain And Snow”.
The band (sans keyboardist) brought their choral vocal A-game for their performance of “Brokedown Palace”, which hears all three guitarists singing lead on each of the three verses throughout the song. It’s nice to hear the group close out their performance of “Palace” with the “Do-Do-Do-Do’s” as heard in the band’s 1970 studio version. Fans can watch their cover of the ballad below.

The band kept their time in the van pretty relaxed for their other performance of “Cold Rain And Snow”. Their rendition of the old traditional folk song also showcases their fantastic group harmonies, in addition to shining a new light on one of the more popular songs from the Dead’s live arsenal.
