Phil Lesh Reunites With Larry Campbell & Teresa Williams At Terrapin Crossroads

146

Phil Lesh & Friends played the first of two concerts with a lineup that features longtime collaborators Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams on Thursday night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. Lesh’s band for the shows also includes drummer John Molo, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and guitarist Stu Allen.

The husband-and-wife duo of Larry and Teresa were members of Phil Lesh & Friends from 2006 – 2008 and last performed as part of the group in 2016. Lesh started off the night on lead vocals for “Uncle John’s Band.” The sextet then dipped into the Jerry Garcia Band repertoire for “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” before returning to Grateful Dead fare in the form of “Cosmic Charlie” and “Casey Jones.” Larry and Teresa’s time in Levon Helm’s band paid off during the traditional “Ain’t No More Cane,” a song The Band and Helm covered. The set concluded with a run of GD rarity “Mason’s Children,” Campbell’s “Midnight Highway” and the Dead’s “Cumberland Blues.”

Last night’s second set began with an adventurous “Viola Lee Blues” and the tender “They Love Each Other.” It was then back to The Band’s repertoire for “Endless Highway.” A seamless sequence of “St. Stephen,” “Mountains Of The Moon” and “Reuben & Cerise” followed. Campbell went on to belt out The Band’s “This Wheel’s On Fire” ahead of a set-closing “Sugaree.” For the encore, Phil Lesh & Friends said farewell with the one-two punch of “Going Down The Road Feelin’ Bad” plus “And We Bid You Goodnight.” A live stream of tonight’s concert is available via nugs.tv.
