On Saturday night, Tedeschi Trucks Band continued their tour with a stop at Mesa, Arizona’s Mesa Amphitheatre, following up the group’s two-night run at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theatre on Thursday and Friday. With a curfew of 9:50 p.m. and brilliant weather, the 12-piece ensemble worked through a variety of older classics and covers to accompany their early showcase at the nearly 5,000-person outdoor venue.
While the band released their fourth studio album, Signs, in mid-February, the group eschewed its tracks throughout the Arizona show, instead favoring some of their more classic fare. Despite the new record being heavily represented during their past two performances in Los Angeles, the group only performed the songs from the effort: the first set’s “When Will I Begin,” “Signs, High Times,” which opened up the evening’s second frame, and a live favorite “Shame.”
Instead, the band opened their show with a trio of tracks off Made Up Mind — “Do I Look Worried?,” “Part of Me” and “Don’t Drift Away,” the latter being as a bonus track of the 2013 LP — followed up by a cover of Dan Penn and Spooner Oldham’s “Sweet Inspiration,” which was popularized by the Sweet Inspirations in the late 1960s. Next, the group turned to the catalog of their mentors, and, in Derek Trucks‘ case, former band members in the Allman Brothers Band, offering up a fiery rendition of “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’,” followed by “When Will I Begin,” Allen Toussaint’s “Get Out Of My Life, Woman” and 2016 title track “Let Me Get By” to close the set.
After the second set’s opening “Signs, High Times,” the band offered up “High & Mighty,” which was recently released on a Record Store Day EP along with two additional tracks culled from Signs. Following Elmore James’ “Sky is Crying” and Bob Dylan’s “Down in the Flood,” the group turned to their often coupled pairing of covers, John Prine’s “Angel of Montgomery” and the Grateful Dead’s “Sugaree.” With a prominent portion of set two featuring back-to-back covers, Susan Tedeschi offered up a powerful rendition of “Shame” ahead of Revelator favorites “Midnight in Harlem” and “Bound for Glory.” The group closed out the show with Joe Tex’s celebratory “Show Me” ahead of their encore of “Made My Mind.”
