The new 94-minute documentary about Phish guitarist Trey Anastasio, Between Me & My Mind, is set to hit select movie theaters nationwide for a one-night-only screening on Wednesday, July 17th.
The documentary originally premiered at the Beacon Theatre as part of the 2019 Tribeca Film Festival. Between Me & My Mind follows Anastasio and his Phish bandmates through the preparation process of 2017’s Baker’s Dozen run at Madison Square Garden, the crafting of the “Soul Planet” New Year’s Eve gag—when they transformed the World’s Most Famous Arena into a pirate ship–and the emotional and often uncertain process of creating Ghosts of the Forest as Trey’s dear friend Chris “C-Cott” Cottrell struggled with and eventually succumbed to his stage 4 cancer diagnosis. The documentary also features heartfelt one-on-one conversations between Trey and his father, his mother, his wife, and his two daughters.
Between Me & My Mind was directed by Jamie Schutz and Steven Cantor, and produced by Schutz. A long time Phish fan since 1992, Schutz started trading tapes and dreaming of a career in film. Now, 24 years later, Between Me & My Mind marks his feature directorial debut. Canton, a veteran filmmaker and fellow music lover, has directed a plethora of critically acclaimed documentaries including Dancer, Willie Nelson: Still Is Still Moving, the Oscar-nominated Blood Ties: The Life & Work Of Sally Mann, the ESPN 30 For 30 Chasing Tyson and many more.
“We’re so thrilled to have the chance to share Trey Anastasio’s constantly inspiring warmth and creativity through our film Between Me and My Mind,” Schutz explained in a press release. “The response at the Tribeca Film Festival was exhilarating and now, along with Trafalgar Releasing, we’re able to bring that excitement to an even larger audience, on the big screen all across North America this July”.
Select theaters that are set to screen the documentary on July 17th have yet to be announced. Fans should head here to sign up for updates on screening locations and ticket information.
