On Saturday, Dead & Company returned to Mountain View, CA’s Shoreline Amphitheatre for the second performance of their tour-opening run. The Grateful Dead spinoff act featuring Bob WeirBill KreutzmannMickey HartJohn MayerJeff Chimenti, and Oteil Burbridge kicked off their 2019 summer run the night prior with an electric performance.

Dead & Company opened up their first set with “Bertha”, led by John Mayer handling the tune’s vocal duties. “Bertha” smoothly transitioned into a cover of The Young Rascals’ “Good Lovin’, with Weir slow and steadily leading his bandmates through the classic 1966 hit. With the Rhythm Devils locking into a bouncy rhythmic pocket, Mayer fired off a series of tenacious guitar solos before moving forward with “They Love Each Other”. Backed by some silky-smooth bass licks from Burbridge’s corner, Dead & Co. showered the Northern California crowd with the theme of “love”. Picking up the pace, the band moved forward with Johnny Cash‘s “Big River”, highlighted by some quick-witted keyboard solos from Chimenti. Mayer handled the vocal duties moving forward with “Mr. Charlie” and “Tennessee Jed” before Weir stepped up to lead the way through a set-closing segue of “Lost Sailor” into “Saint of Circumstance”.

Following a setbreak, the band returned to open their second set with the classic pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” into “I Know You Rider”. As “Rider” faded out, Dead & Company coasted into a beautiful rendition of “Row Jimmy”, highlighted by some tender lead vocals from Mayer. The band kept on chuggin’ with “Deal”, as Mayer and Chimenti traded off scorching hot licks before crashing into “The Other One”. Burbridge locked into the song’s main theme alongside Hart and Kreutzmann, with Weir paving the path through some dreamy improvisational territory.

Next, Hart and Kreutzmann took the reigns for the customary “Drums/Space” portion of the evening, followed by a debut cover of “My Favorite Things”. The band offered up an instrumental take on the classic song from The Sound Of Music  before landing back into “The Other One”. Weir stepped up to lead his bandmates through a somber set-closing “Morning Dew”, allowing Mayer to dazzle the crowd with his mind-bending guitar work. Dead & Company returned to offer up an exploratory encore of “Uncle John’s Band” into a “Supplication” jam, which saw Mayer and Chimenti get a final chance to bounce off of each other’s improvisational lead. The band returned to a “Playin’ In The Band” reprise to properly close out the tune, which was left unfinished from the night prior.
